Here is something a guest writer wrote in the last issue:
A Business Travelers Journal
By Mark Koshute
Last week I was stuck in Michigan , Owosso Michigan to be exact, on business. I was providing technical service for a company that makes automotive foam headrests and armrests. There were not many hotels in the area and I ended up staying at a Quality Inn in a town called Durand, about ten miles away. While looking for a place to eat in downtown Durand I noticed what looked like and big old train station and clock tower. When paying my bill at the restaurant, called “Nick’s Place”, I asked the clerk what the town is known for and what is the significance of the tower. She said that Durand was known as the town of trains. “You can’t go anywhere without running into railroad tracks and getting delayed by trains” she said. Apparently a lot of railroad lines intersect at Durand. The building that I saw was indeed an old station. In fact it is home to the Michigan Railroad History Museum & Durand Union Station. It houses one of five Railroad Libraries in the USA and Michigan ’s official railroad transportation information depository. As far as the tower was concerned, apparently “people come from all over the state to hear the bells ring”.
It is these kinds of surprise discoveries that make travel a little more tolerable. However, I would still rather be home.
